Holiday season is here, and it’s time to ransack your house for old Christmas decorations to adorn your home. The challenge, it seems, is how to make every home more dashing each Christmas. If you’re tired of the same old décor that you put up every year, it’s time to channel your inner Marsha Stewart and create your own Christmas decoration.
In the last post, you’ve read about how to make an elegant Christmas centerpiece. Now, this post is all about making your very own Christmas topiary. By the way, topiary can be either a real tree or fake one that’s shaped into a different figure. In this case, we’re going to use flowers to make a Christmas tree.
It’s best to use existing fresh flowers you have at home. But if you don’t have them, you can order from your florist all the flowers you’ll need. To make it even easier for you, you can even go online to shop for blooms. Just make sure you’re dealing with a reputable online florist to get the best flowers and service.
What you’ll need:
Cone-shaped floral foam
Floral foam base
Wooden dowel rod
Vase or flower pot
Small Christmas balls
White or red floral stems
- Create your topiary base. You can get any kind of vase or flower pot for this purpose. Cut the floral foam base to fit the inside bottom of the vase or pot.
- Insert the dowel into the center of the floral foam. Be careful not to push it all the way through. Place the other end of the rod into the floral foam base.
- Cut flower stems to about an inch or two below the blooms. Push the stems into the cone-shaped foam. Start at the bottom and work your way upwards. Red roses and carnations are perfect for Christmas topiary because of their festive colors. You may also use flowers of another color (white is a good option), but make sure the blooms are big enough. This way, you don’t have to put in a lot of flowers to fill in the floral foam.
- Randomly insert Christmas balls into the tree. Secure them in place with hot glue if needed.
Topiaries are nice accents to any home. You can place them on the table as a centerpiece or outside the house to welcome your guests. They’re also excellent gift ideas for the holidays.
