Myth or Fact: Communicating with Flowers Lengthens its Lifespan

You’ve just received a gift from someone who considers you as a person who is very special to them – a bouquet of fresh flowers and a box of chocolates. Well this is nice, you think to yourself. In a surprisingly short amount of time, you consume the box of chocolates, and you’re now staring at the bunch of flowers, which you’ve already put in a vase with cold water.

Still dwelling on the very admirable fact that someone is sensible enough to give you a bouquet of flowers and a box of chocolates, you dreamily mumble words of gratitude, reflecting on the amiable gesture that you were the recipient of. The next thing you know, you find yourself having a one-way conversation with flowers! Don’t get me wrong, but don’t think that talking to flowers, or other inanimate objects, is demeaning. But does communicating with flowers lengthen their lifespan? By the end of this article, you can discern for yourself whether it does or it doesn’t.

Communicating with FlowersTalking to plants in general.

Largely, the habit of talking to plants with the intent to lengthen their life is a common thing to hear from various garden enthusiasts. It’s temptingly easy to conclude that this is mere baloney. But surprisingly, thanks to a few experiments, there IS truth behind this. A group of scientists of the South Korea National Institute of Agricultural Biotechnology in 2007 came up with the results that exposing rice plants to classical music affects 2 genes in the plant. These two genes are responsible for the plant’s response to light – which of course, is an essential part to its growth.

Another experiment done is by the famous T.V. show of Discovery Channel, The Mythbusters, in their 2004 season. In that experiment, they had several samples of pea plants exposed to different kinds of sounds and recordings. These recordings varied from human speech and genres of music. They discovered that the plants exposed to sound 24/7, without regard for what sound was played, grew significantly better than the peas with no sound played to it. Despite such tests, the scientific community hasn’t wholly accepted this, so there’s still a lot of skepticism surrounding this method. It’s probably because they can present no firm explanation. But as far as the experiments prove, the vibrations brought about by sound waves seem to aid in the growth of plants somehow.

What about the lifespan of a bouquet of cut flowers?

Several flowers can survive an extended amount of time by putting the cut stems in water. If the flower is still able to go through photosynthesis during this state, you can say that it’s still alive. Since I earlier showed you the head-scratching effect of sound waves to plants in general, and since a living flower is still a plant, we can say that it can have the same effect on those flowers. If it’s true that the vibrations due to sound waves can help the plant respond better to light, but also aid in the transportation of nutrients throughout the plant, then maybe, but just maybe, the flowers will live a little longer than without it.

I’m no guarantor. But I’m pretty impressed with the results of the experiments on those plants. Aren’t you? So what’s stopping you from having a good chat with those sweet-smelling cuts of flora? If you’re just really happy enough to do it because you appreciate the flowers so much, why not just do so?

True or False: Woman Prefer Flowers over Stuffed Toys as Gifts

I asked several women all over Metro Manila, aged 18 to 30 years old, on which gift they would prefer – flowers or stuffed toys. Out of 25 women who answered the survey, 13 chose flowers, 10 chose stuffed toys, and 2 chose both. Here are some of the reasons why they chose their preferred gifts.

“I’d want to receive FLOWERS, simply because I don’t like stuffed toys and flowers are more soothing and comforting to look at.”“FLOWERS.  I’m romantic like that.  Stuffed toys are for flings.”

“I think I would go for FLOWERS. My stuffed toys just end up as display, and I end up giving away most of them.

“NEVER STUFFED TOYS. EVER. Flowers forever! Because they’re so naturally beautiful. And because they are the most traditional gift of affection and admiration.”

“If I was younger, I would prefer stuffed toys and that’s probably because I would be more attached to my “kiddie” side. But, now that I’m older and more mature (Hahaha), I’d definitely go for flowers. More romantic and more appropriate for my age.”

“Flowers. They feel more… romantic.”

“Flowers! They’re so pretty! I don’t know why, but I never really liked stuffed toys.”

“FLOWERS definitely… I’m just not a fan of stuffed toys (It just gathers dust. Haha.)”

“Stuffed toys because I like hugging them.”“Stuffed toys, I guess, so I could keep it for a long time. I’m a very sentimental person.”

“I chose stuffed toys! Because they last longer than flowers, and because they usually remind you of something.”

“Stuffed toys! ‘Cause, for me, hugging it is like hugging the person who gave it to you.”

Stuffed Toy with FlowersSo… based on the answers of these women, which do you think is the preferred gift by women in general – flowers or stuffed toys? I think the answer would be… IT DEPENDS. It depends on the age and the personality of the girl. Most members of the teenage group would probably prefer stuffed toys over flowers, while and for the young to mid-adult age group, the preferable gift would most likely be flowers. Nevertheless, it still depends on the personality of the person. I learned from my survey experience that here are girls who like flowers more than stuffed toys even if they are still young, and there are also women who still like stuffed toys even if they are already adults. Therefore, if you want to give something to a girl, you have to first know her personality so that you’ll know which type of gift she’d appreciate the most. Or better yet… just to be sure… give her both!

What Do Women Really Want?

What Do Women Want? Here is something that every guy wonders about, whether it’s with their girlfriend, their wives or even with their first date. There are numerous numbers of sources out there where you can get your information: websites, magazines and the simple advices your friends tell you.

Because of these numerous and differing sources, things can really get confusing, especially in the modern age where women are more empowered. They are independent, and can take care of themselves. So where does that leave the men? How can we know what women really want?

The truth is that women love to be pampered. They love to be taken care of. But, at the same time, they also want to be independent. Women want a guy who is sensitive, who knows when to be there for them and when to give them space to do what they want. Still confused? Don’t be, it’s much easier than it sounds.

Holding Hands

Whether we’re talking about a woman who looks classically feminine, or someone who is more modern and independent, their desires share the same thing, and that is to be the center of your world.

First, let’s explore the basics. We, as men, should know that women love to communicate. Notice that I’m saying “communicate”, and not “talk”. It’s not about sprouting out a thousand words a minute. Rather, it’s about knowing and sharing your opinions, your interests. Such things can include the humble happenings of your day. Now, we must be reminded that this is a two way street, which means that you also have to find out about your partner’s day. First you talk, and now you listen. Act accordingly.

This process is a matter of time. Remember, you take out time to find out about your partner through communication. So what happens now is that you have to spend time with her. She should be an integral part of your daily life. If you’re at work, take time out periodically to give her a call and say hello. Spend time with her when you get home. But remember, there is a fine line from smothering and caring. You should still have your own life. Never abandon doing the things that you love. Though it’s true that she needs to know that she’s the center of your world, you also need her to miss you every so often. And remember, a woman loves the complete package, which is someone who is caring, protective, supportive AND has a lot of things going for them. They want someone who is the center of other people’s attention. Bear in mind, all of what I’ve talked so far revolves around the feeling of being loved, and everyone loves to be wanted.

Gift-Giving

The next is obviously the gifts. Women love gifts, whether it’s little tokens of appreciation, flowers or even chocolates. Well, for that matter, everybody loves gifts don’t they? Women are slightly harder to gauge. They will always say that they love something, unless you have done something terrible. But, in the case where you’re in the safe zone, or even in a bit of a tough zone, you should know what kind of gifts your woman likes.

You will know this through the communication and time you spend with her. Not all women love red roses. Some like lilies, others love daffodils, while the rest could be into sunflowers; we all have different tastes. The same thing goes with chocolates. Some love dark chocolate, others white chocolate. Some love expensive truffles, while others like mainstream milk chocolate. Tokens of appreciation are more specific in a way that they should be based on their personality and something they love. You can give a girl a stuffed bear, even a slinky one, if that’s what she like.

Remember, not all women are the same. You need to spend time and have a two-way communication with your partner to really know what she wants.

How Flowers Light up One’s Day

It doesn’t matter if you’re in a restaurant or a wedding. Believe me, they’re everywhere. Whenever you pass by a garden, or even when you go out on a date, you’ll see at least one of them. We know that they’re beautiful, and that they come in different shapes, colors and scents. There is a flower for every occasion and person. Their presence always adds to our happiness.

FlowerfieldYou might be scratching your head now, wondering how flowers are associated with happiness. The faint yelling of the words, ‘Flower Power’, ring in your ears as you imagine a psychedelic-looking van and a woman wearing a lily tiara who keeps unloading flowers off the side of that very psychedelic van. Okay, maybe you’re not thinking about the second part, but I can almost be sure that you’re still wondering about all the flower talk.

Firstly, let’s look at the basics of why flowers make people happy. They are beautiful; they look incredibly beautiful. They can make any surrounding look like paradise. Be it a rose garden with reds, peach, white, and even blue roses. Add in some sunflowers, lilies, orchids… the list goes on. The colors are vibrant, their petals are soft and the scents are sweet. The combination of these makes flowers physically attractive. It’s not only isolated to gardens or open air. It could be located at an office space, a living room or even a dormitory study desk. Its soft subtleness makes the surrounding décor attractive and makes anyone feel positive by just being in that room.

Flowers in SunlightSecondly, there is the social status associated with flowers. We use them in almost every occasion; be it weddings, dates, anniversaries, homecomings, graduations, proms and even housewarmings. When one receives a flower bouquet, they instantly feel happy because they know that there’s someone out there who took the time to show them how much they are loved.

Thirdly, and probably the most importantly, is that flowers are, in essence, superbly pretty. It lights up anyone’s mood whether they are visiting a park or placing a vase in their living room. They become more positive, less depressed. Their energy levels jump up and they feel that whatever space they are in seems bigger.

Flowers are magical little things, and if you want a more positive vibe in your life, having a vase of flowers in your room won’t hurt now, would it?

The Tassel’s worth the Hassle: Give Flowers on Graduation

Go to http://philippineflowermart.com/Endless sleepless nights slaving over schoolwork have now come to an end. No more cramming for projects and studying all night long for an exam. A collective sigh can now be heard from among those who will march to the stage for graduation.

Summer signals the conclusion of almost a yearlong studying. But more importantly, this is a time when students anticipate a new chapter in their lives. Every student looks forward to graduation day when he or she would be able to take a breather from all that schoolwork. With all the hard work put into making the grade, it’s about time that we reward their perseverance.

You can treat your graduate to a dinner in a posh restaurant, a spa treatment, a vacation out of town, a shopping spree or a new gadget. These are all wonderful things to do for someone who means so much to you and has made a lot of efforts in studying well.

But if you want to truly surprise them, send them flowers to show that you are celebrating with them on this special day. Pick flowers that complement their school colors. Or if your graduate has a favorite, ask your florist to arrange them for you. Look for a florist who can make things easier for you. It’s also better if you can order online.

If you think that flowers alone won’t do, throw in a basket of chocolates, balloons or a stuffed toy to make the celebration feel complete. After all, this day is all about making your graduate feel really special.
